Accreditation is a process of quality assurance and improvement, whereby a programme in an approved Institution is critically appraised to verify that the Institution or the programme continues to meet and exceed the norms and standards prescribed by AICTE from time-to-time. It is a kind of recognition which indicates that a programme or institution fulfils certain standards.
All Diploma, Degree (Under-graduate and Post-graduate) programmes in the following disciplines are covered under accreditation by NBA:
Engineering & Technology;
Computer Applications;
Pharmacy;
Management;
Hotel Management and Catering Technology; and
Architecture
Institutions that have already been granted accreditation for a period of three years, are required to submit the compliance report at least 6 months before the expiry of validity of accreditation along with the compliance fee.
On receipt of compliance report, a two-member Visiting Team of experts is constituted by NBA for the visit of the respective institution. The report of the visiting team is considered by the concerned committee in NBA for continuation (or otherwise) of accreditation for an appropriate period.
Criteria used by NBA for accreditation are given in the Manual for Accreditation of Undergraduate Engineering Programs (for Tier I Institutions) as well as in the General Manual for Accreditation.
No. Only the concerned Institution from where you have graduated can apply for accreditation of courses offered by it.
Your Institution can:
If your Institution and the programs run by it are approved by the AICTE; and
If at least two batches of students have passed out of the programme proposed for accreditation except for the management programmes. In case of a Management programme, at least three batches should have graduated.
Registration by Institutions with NBA is a one-time process.

If the program has passed two batches in Current Academic Year then the program will be eligible for accreditation only if you apply for accreditation from 1st October onwards as till 30th September the current academic year will be the previous academic year for which only one batch is passed.
For Example:
If you apply for accreditation of such program on or before 30th September 2019, the Current Academic Year will be considered as 2018-19 and the recently passed batch will be considered as year 2017-18 only. However, if you apply from 1st Oct., 2019 onwards the Current Academic Year will be considered as 2019-20 and the recently passed batch will be considered as 2017-18 and 2018-19.
The pre-qualifiers are a set of parameters, which an Institution is required to comply with before applying for accreditation.
The pre-qualifiers are applicable for the following programmes:
Engineering: UG (Tier-I/II), PG, Diploma
Pharmacy: UG
Management: PG
Hotel Management and Catering Technology: PG

If a program fails to qualify pre-qualifiers, the application will not be processed further. The Institution can apply again after meeting the parameters defined in pre-qualifiers.
NBA does not accredit Institutions or departments in an Institution. It accredits only technical programs offered by an Institution.
The NBA website maintains a database of Accredited programs of Institutions.
NBA has revised the duration of award of accreditation, i.e., 3 years of Accreditation and 6 years for Full Accreditation in lieu of earlier practice of 2 years of Provisional Accreditation and 5 years for Full Accreditation.

The Washington Accord, originally signed among six countries in 1989, is an International Agreement among bodies responsible for accrediting undergraduate engineering degree programs. It recognizes the substantial equivalency of programs accredited by those bodies and recommends that graduates of programs accredited by any of the signatory bodies be recognized by the other bodies as having met the academic requirements for entry to the practice of engineering in the area of their jurisdiction. The Washington Accord is applicable to only UG Engineering. In India, it is applicable only to the UG engineering programs of Tier I Engineering institutions.
Universities, Deemed-to-be-Universities, University Departments and Autonomous Institutions imparting programmes in Engineering at UG level and have freedom to design, develop and update curricula and also have complete academic autonomy are considered as TIER I institutions.
